MMILL Team Planning

I am in the Oral histories and materials group for the MMILL project. Last class we decided that everyone would each take five people and for each person do the audio configuration, transcript blurb writing, photo editing and audio file conversion. We also decided the specific people we'd each be in charge of for this project. We need to figure out how to convert the CD's and cassette tapes to audio mp3. Hopefully we will be discussing our next steps for this in the next class period. We also need to discuss what we will be naming the files (we explored the idea of last name and date). The goal right now is to make a more organised system where viewers of the website can easily access these peoples stories and understand what/who they are learning about.

Our knowledge of digital humanities that we've learned so far can help us with this project. Specifically, chapter 5 on database design. One of the main goals of this website is to make it more accessible to the public and having an easy to use database is a main way to approach this. It is our job to come up with search terms and an organzition method and from this chapter we know that entails, "The construction of a database for a humanities research project requires analytic rigor and sorting out what belongs with what, and what relation- ships these entities—and information about them—have with each other." (Drucker 17).  Our materials, process, and presentation steps will be fixing the audio conversions, renaming the files, and presentation of how the photo/audio files are organized. Because one of the MMILLS goals is to make the site for accessible we will organzie the data carefully to make it easy to use.

  1. The oral history project seems very cool. I can't wait to see the final outcome, and read the blurbs. Good luck with converting the CD's and cassette tapes. I wish I could offer some advice on the subject. My team also needs to discuss about our next steps as well.

  2. It sounds like you are really getting on top of the organization of the website. This is a great idea and I'm sure will bring in lots of new viewers. It tends to put people off when they are struggling to navigate around a site, so creating a user friendly database is a great idea.
